Service schedules for Kenyan conditions

Manufacturer service intervals are written for markets with consistent fuel quality, sealed roads and moderate dust. Kenya has none of those consistently.

Shorten these

Engine oil. If the book says 10,000 km, do 7,500 km. Dust and stop-start traffic both shorten oil life.

Air filter. Inspect every service, replace at half the recommended interval if you drive on murram regularly.

Fuel filter. Diesel owners in particular should not stretch this. Contaminated fuel is the single most common cause of injector failure locally.

Brake fluid. Two years maximum regardless of mileage. Humidity on the coast makes this non-negotiable.

Leave these alone

Timing chains do not need pre-emptive replacement on most modern Toyotas. Transmission fluid on sealed-for-life units should follow the manufacturer's guidance unless the vehicle tows.

CVT owners

Change the fluid every 40,000 km even where the book says the fluid is lifetime. A CVT rebuild costs more than a decade of fluid changes.

Keep the record
